Unique to the Lowcountry since Colonial times, Benne (which is the Bantu word for sesame) was brought from East Africa and planted extensively throughout the South. Many Lowcountry recipes call for this tasty toasted seed, but none is so loved as the Benne Wafer.
Benne Wafers by Olde Colony Bakery were like the first fortune cookies. These thin crisp cookies are made from toasted sesame seeds and are a treasured sweet and salty treat. A Charleston favorite, our recipe dates back over 100 years and is believed to be the original Benne Wafer recipe. After all that time people are still craving these tasty morsels of goodness from the Low Country that are supposed to bring good luck to those that eat them. Better stock up!
